Individuals and families whose storm-related expenses include damages beyond the loss of food due to power outages may be eligible.
The New Jersey Department of Human Services’ Division of Family Development, which administers SNAP through the counties, is coordinating these processes with the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Services.
The D-SNAP application process eases requirements around documents necessary to apply and weighs disaster-related costs with available liquid resources when considering eligibility. Benefits are electronically applied to a card similar to a debit/credit card for the purchase of certain food items.
Residents also should be sure to register for FEMA assistance at www.disasterassistance.gov and to check www.nj211.org for valuable disaster-related information including, how to: acquire clean-up kits; schedule home inspections, and; exercise renters rights. The Department of Health and Senior Services also has a Call Center for public health concerns related to flooding at 1-866-234-0964. Its hours of operation are: 8AM- 8PM Monday – Friday and weekends 10 AM to 5PM.
The following sites are the application intake sites for residents of Middlesex County to apply for D-SNAP benefits. Each site has different operating hours so check the location and hours of operation closely. Each site has designated municipalities in their catchment areas. Some municipalities are listed at multiple sites and residents may visit either site. If the site assigned to a specific municipality is problematic for a resident, they may visit any location listed for the county.
There is also a breakdown alphabetically to assist residents in applying. By assigning specific days to alphabetic designations of the first letter of a resident’s last name, we are attempting to manage anticipated volume. Please attempt to apply on the assigned day. However, if there is an inability to apply on a specific day, please apply at whatever location is convenient. Please note that all sites do not have extended hours every evening. If there is a need to apply in the evening, use the closest location to your assigned location that has evening hours.
Any questions can be directed to the Board of Social Services at 732-745-3500.
